Why Should I Read The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People?

Stephen Covey was a world-renowned author, speaker, educator, and business leader. Although he passed away in 2012, his most famous book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, contains a wealth of timeless knowledge that has helped millions of leaders become more successful since its original publication in 1989. Here’s why you should read it.

What Are the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People?

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is based on the principle that success is not about what you do but how you do it. Through the seven habits he outlines in the book, Covey teaches readers how to be more effective in their personal and professional lives.

Although the book details further, even a basic understanding of the seven habits can help you improve your productivity. Here are a few main takeaways from The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

  1. Be proactive: Take responsibility for the overall direction of your life, even when individual events are out of your hands. Of course, no one benefits from ruminating on what’s going wrong. But, on the other hand, you can always control your attitude and decide to take the initiative if you maintain a positive mindset.
  1. Begin with the end in mind: Have a clearly defined goal and work towards it. It’s one thing to have abstract outcomes you’d like to see, but another to make concrete plans and evaluate your resources to achieve your vision.
  1. Put first things first: Prioritize the most critical tasks and learn to say “no” to distractions. This sounds like a no-brainer, but it isn’t easy in practice. It’s easy to fall into the trap of people-pleasing or being sidelined by attractive detours. Either way, we end up devoting time and energy to things that aren’t necessary at the cost of things that are.
  1. Think win-win: Strive for outcomes that benefit all parties involved. It pays to be willing to compromise slightly if it means finding a solution that satisfies everyone. You’re much more likely to persuade others to help or follow you if you show them how they’ll benefit.
  1. Seek first to understand, then to be understood: Listen to others and be sure you fully understand their perspective before speaking about your own. So many miscommunications and conflicts could be avoided if people listened to each other instead of formulating a response while the other person was talking.
  1. Synergize: Work with others to create results more significant than the sum of their parts. Synergy encourages collaboration and creativity, leading to better results than anyone could achieve.
  1. Sharpen the saw: Everyone needs time to recharge, although it’s hard for business leaders to admit this. However, it would be best if you prioritized your physical, mental, and spiritual needs to stay focused and productive long-term. This means protecting your work-life balance, establishing healthy routines, and taking advantage of vacation time throughout the year.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People provides invaluable guidance for anyone looking to improve their personal and professional life. By following these habits, readers can increase their effectiveness at work and home, eventually discovering the kind of success that matters most.
