Successfully Navigating Supply Chain Disruptions

Business owners can face unprecedented disruptions to everyday processes when the future feels uncertain. An unstable economy, cybersecurity threats, tensions abroad, new tariffs, or severe weather events can all create supply chain issues, causing manufacturing delays and wreaking havoc on your small business.

How to Mitigate Supply Chain Disruption

Supply chain disruptions can result in
an extended inability to deliver the finished product on time to your consumers. When considering the supply chain, you’ll notice many opportunities for holdups or setbacks. It’s not a matter of if there will be problems with the supply chain but when and how severe they will be.

Still, the problem with supply chain issues is that they tend to take everyone by surprise—otherwise, they wouldn’t be so catastrophic. While there’s no way to predict when disruptions in the supply chain will occur, you can ensure you’re as prepared as possible if the worst should happen.

Here are 5 ways to anticipate and resolve supply chain disruptions in your small business.

  1. Stay on top of your inventory management. If you have not always been meticulous, now is the time to start. A great inventory management program allows you to track your inventory in real time, anticipating shortages before they occur.
  2. Use past data to predict demand. Some busy seasons, like Christmas, are obvious, but your business might have its own specific busy seasons that you can determine based on past sales data. Analyze these trends to anticipate when you’ll need to have more stock on hand, then order this stock far in advance so you’re prepared.
  3. Diversify your suppliers. Having a diverse base of suppliers for your materials is a good idea. Sourcing your components from suppliers in different regions can give you more options in the event of global supply chain issues. It’s also a good idea to research backup suppliers in case of trouble.
  4. Communicate with your suppliers and customers. Having a good relationship with your suppliers and integrity in the eyes of your customers can go a long way during a supply chain disruption. Be transparent when there are delays and communicate frequently. Offer incentives such as discounts to your customers for their loyalty.
  5. Stay nimble. What are some ways you can remain adaptable in the face of an emergency? Are there ways to substitute parts of your offerings if a key material becomes unavailable? Consider ways your company can bypass supply chain disruptions even if your main components can no longer be sourced.

Although supply chain issues can dent your business momentum, you don’t have to let them catch you unawares. Being proactive about your inventory can save you time, money, and frustration in the long run.
